Congress Declares National Adult Education & Family Literacy Week
On Tuesday, October 6 the United States Congress passed a resolution designating the week of October 18th as Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. In support of the resolution, Rep. Michael Michaud said, “I am a cosponsor of the bill because it encourages people across the United States to support programs that assist those in need of adult education and family literacy programs.”
Here in Maine, the Maine Adult Education Association (MAEA) (www.maineadulted.org) is a nonprofit organization representing local Adult Education programs that offer services to over 85% of cities and towns in Maine. Maine’s Adult Education programs offers a variety of services including Literacy including English Language Literacy, High School Completion and GED, College Transitions, Business and Skills Training and Personal Enrichment. Maine Adult Education programs award 2200 GED credentials and 800 high school diplomas annually.
“We are thankful for Congressmen Michaud’s continued support of adult education and literacy in Maine”, says Cathy Newell, Executive Director of MAEA. “I hope the designation of Adult Education and Family Literacy week will empower more people to explore all that Maine Adult Education has to offer and be reminded of the importance of Family Literacy, a unique approach to building strong families with educational skills.”
According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, there are approximately 90 million adults who lack the literacy skills to reach their full potential. Approximately 30 million of these individuals are at the lowest levels of literacy. In the current economic downturn, Maine Adult Education programs are working with many people seeking to develop basic educational skills to prepare for further education or to enter the job market.
Over the course of the week, Maine’s Adult Education and Literacy centers across the state will welcome visitors and prospective students to meet with staff and volunteers. For more information, and to locate a program in their community, individuals may visit the Maine Adult Education web portal, www.maineadulted.org
